What is the Most Low Maintenance Fence Material?

There are a lot of factors that go into picking the right fencing material for your home or property. It should look good, be easy to install and last as long as possible. Vinyl fencing has become famous for all of those qualities. Vinyl fencing is very flexible and can stand up to a lot of incidental damage like falling limbs and hail. Plus, it is impervious to bad weather, rot, and aging which will eventually cause a wooden fence to splinter and warp.  It does not take much to keep a vinyl fence looking its best. Spray it with the hose or if it becomes really dirty, clean it with soap and water to make it look as good as new. A lot of people have trouble telling a newly installed vinyl fence from one that has been in place for ten years.

Vinyl fencing is definitely the most low maintenance type of material but it has other benefits as well:

  • Selection – Since vinyl fencing is man-made, it can be worked into a multitude of styles and colors. Ornamental fences, picket fences, privacy fences, split rail fences and post and rail fences can all be built using vinyl material. If you are going for a more traditional look then you can get them in white, almond and clay but if you want something a little different you can even get vinyl fencing in simulated wood grain and stone patterns.
  • Installation – The parts are extremely lightweight and they are sold disassembled. Since you can put them together on site, many people are able to install the fence by themselves. If you have no experience in fence installation then you might want to call in an expert to do it for you.
  • Durability – Vinyl fences are extremely durable and outside of an occasional wash, they will never need to be maintained.
  • Price – Some people are put off by the price because vinyl fencing is more expensive than wooden fencing. That could be a costly mistake. You may pay a little bit more up front for a vinyl fence but think about how much you will save in the long run. Over time a wooden fence can rot and the paint will start to peel. To prevent it, you will need to do a good bit of annual maintenance just to keep the fence in good shape. With a vinyl fence there is no ongoing maintenance price to worry about so it might be the cheaper option.
