Inside the city: a permit for every new fence
The City of Kennesaw requires a building permit for all new fencing, with a location map, dimensions, and materials on the application. The finished side faces your neighbors and the street, and posts go on your side. Fences in the Historic District follow the city’s historic design standards.
4 feet in front, 8 feet on the sides and back
Residential fences in the city max out at 4 feet in the front yard and 8 feet in side and rear yards. On a corner lot, the 4-foot limit runs along both street sides. Front-yard fences on lots under 2 acres have to be decorative: brick, stone, wood, stucco, wrought iron, or split rail. No chain link or wire out front.
Unincorporated Cobb: county rules, no county permit
Outside the city line, Cobb County caps residential fences at 8 feet, dropping to 6 feet along a public road or in front of and beside the house, measured from the existing grade including posts and ornaments. A typical residential fence doesn’t need a county permit. Your HOA may still want a say.
